The Whole Truth About Whole Grains

Written by Sarah Park

Whole-wheat bread or pasta may not be as nutritious as you think.  Multi-grain and whole grain foods can be overly processed and are made to last on a shelf for weeks at a time. These products are also packed with carbohydrates and offer few nutrients due to the long ingredient list of processed chemicals.

In addition, starches from this process are broken down very quickly in the digestive system, causing a spike in blood sugar and then a drop.  This "crash" causes a person to become hungry again, and the cycle continues if they continue to reach for another high carb snack.

The bottom line? Watch your whole-grain servings and understand that they're still carbohydrates. Try to replace the grain in your diet with other, healthier alternatives like veggies. Here are a few ideas we like:  http://detoxinista.com/2015/06/6-healthy-ways-to-replace-the-grains-in-your-diet/
