Review On Workout Program: Insanity

INSANITY!!!  I did the program for 90 days and wanted to share my opinion through my personal experiences.  First, I will describe the kind of person I am when it comes to working out so you can better understand my perspective.  I have played competitive soccer my whole life and have very good endurance, I am a professional breakdancer and am somewhat flexible, I am super competitive, eat healthy, love challenges, and am open to new ways of working out!

I laughed when my boss told me that for our warm ups before our dance training for touring with the music artist T-Pain we were to do an insanity work out.  I had faintly heard of the program and when I saw the informercial I became skeptical that this was going to change my whole body for the better and give me results I never would have dreamed of having.

Shaun T, the motivational speaker and director of the work outs, is the kind of person that you would find in your gym doing their repetitions with loud moans or grunts constantly checking themselves out in the mirror.  The video usually ends or starts with some visual motivation of Shaun T yelling “DO YOU WANT TO GET ABS LIKE THESE” (pointing to himself and maybe a few other members).

I found it hilarious, however as soon as Shaun T is done saying his cheesy lines the work out really jumps into it!  Every workout begins with a warm up, which in my opinion, for most people could in itself be a challenging work out.  Warm ups typically are the same for all workouts and consist of anything from jumping, body squats, running in place, sprinting in place, kicking, and other various cardio exercises.  After the warm up you definately should have broken a good sweat and the video leaves you around a minute to catch one last drink before the work out begins.

The work outs go in sets of 3.  The routines are challenging, yet give you the ability to work on your own pace.  Cardio, cardio, cardio, sweat, sweat, sweat!  Anything can happen from jumping kicks, push ups, unique abdomen excercises, punching, leg lifts, etc.  The burn is felt right away and the program really tests your will power in those 30 minute work outs.  What I really enjoyed is how intense, concise, and effective the work out is.  It really puts perspective of how much you can work and accomplish in as little as 20 minutes.

After working for about 1 month in insanity my body was very tone and what I especially loved was having the cut in the lower abs.  I had never had the lower abs cut before the program and loved how much emphasis was put in the lower abdomen.  I also noticed myself becoming more flexible from the yoga like stretching that the video does at the cool down of each work out.

Overall, insanity is a great program if you are ok with sweating A LOT, looking to loose wieght fast, be pushed to the maximum, and looking to tone, or cut your body hard.  I will mention that this is NOT the program for you if you are looking to bulk up.

  1. You know what’s funny? I JUST started this program on Monday. Glad you posted about this.

My two cents – I swam for 8 years as well, so I thought “heck if I can swim, this should be no problem.” Swimming was a huge challenge but I like that insanity is much more short/precise of a workout. With swimming, I’d be in the pool for four hours a day and combined with lifting and dryland programs, exercise became a HUGE time commitment. These workouts are quick, effective, and challenging – which is a nice change.

I also really like the nutrition plan. It’s nice to have that “grocery list” of sorts because then I’m not tempted to buy the Oreo’s or stop at McDonalds (because I already know what I am having for lunch!).

Anyways, in the end I agree that it’s a great program and definately something that anyone could fit into their schedule. I think it would be cool if some of these DVD programs lasted more than 60 days but at the very lease, those 60 days are going to be great!
